An Alaskan cruise is a dream trip for many, so it's important to do your research and be well-prepared to ensure an unforgettable experience. In this post, I'll share some essential Alaska Packing List items to help you know what to expect and make the most of your Alaskan cruise adventure.
What to Expect When Planning an Alaskan Cruise
We cruised to Alaska on a 5-week back-to-back cruise on the Carnival Luminosa in July 2023, and while it was an amazing adventure, I did make some mistakes, such as overpacking and underestimating the warmer weather possibilities in July.

Unpredictable Weather
When planning an Alaskan cruise, it's crucial to be prepared for the region's notoriously unpredictable weather. Alaska's climate can be highly variable, even during the summer months when most cruises take place. Temperatures can range from chilly and damp to surprisingly warm, and precipitation can come in the form of rain, fog, or even snow. To ensure you're ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way, it's essential to pack a versatile wardrobe that can adapt to these changing conditions.
Surprisingly, I wore shorts in Alaska in July of 2023 as the temperature reached 82 degrees in the midafternoon. Packing at least one pair of shorts for your July or August Alaskan cruise is a good idea. However, expect some chilly mornings around 50 degrees with the weather cooling off in the evening.
Dress in Layers for Maximum Comfort
One of the most important tips for an Alaskan cruise is to dress in layers. The weather can fluctuate dramatically, even within the same day, so having the ability to add or remove clothing as needed is key. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics, then add insulating mid-layers and a waterproof, windproof outer shell. This layering system will allow you to stay comfortable no matter the weather.
Don't forget to pack accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves to protect yourself from the elements. Yes, gloves are even needed in July and August on those chilly mornings of glacier viewing.
One of the most popular items I saw passengers wearing in July and August was a flannel button up shirt. This is great to wear in the mornings, then tie around your waist during the day, and put back on in the early evening hours.
Be Prepared for Rain
One of the most common mistakes first-time Alaskan cruisers make is underestimating the amount of rain they'll encounter. Even during the summer months, Alaska can experience frequent, heavy downpours that can quickly soak through inadequate rain gear.
Be sure to pack a high-quality, waterproof jacket and pants, as well as rain boots or other waterproof footwear.
Note: Rain boots are not necessary if you are planning on just walking through the town. However, I do recommend good sturdy walking shoes that are waterproof.
Juneau can be a very rainy destination in July and early part of August. Although, we encountered the rainiest days on our 5 weeks in Alaska in Ketchikan.
Alaskan Wilderness and Wildlife
One of the biggest draws of an Alaskan cruise is the opportunity to witness the region's stunning natural beauty and abundant wildlife. From towering glaciers and snow-capped mountains to whales, bears, and bald eagles, there's no shortage of awe-inspiring sights to behold. To make the most of these experiences, be sure to pack a pair of binoculars and, if you're an avid photographer, a high-quality camera with a telephoto lens. Keeping your eyes and ears open for wildlife sightings and being prepared to capture them can greatly enhance your Alaskan cruise experience.
The summer months from June to late August early September is the best time to see wildlife.
However, don't make the same mistake I did and pack a cheap pair of binoculars. You will want to make sure your binoculars have a decent zoom to see bears and eagles of in the distance. There is always something to see in Alaska.
Take Advantage of Onboard Experts and Naturalists
Many Alaskan cruise lines employ knowledgeable naturalists and experts who are eager to share their insights about the region's geography, history, and wildlife. These onboard resources can be invaluable for gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of your surroundings. Be sure to attend any lectures or presentations offered, and don't hesitate to ask questions to deepen your knowledge and enrich your overall cruise experience.
I never would have known the best place to spot salmon swimming upstream on our cruise if I hadn't talked to our naturalist. By the way, it's Creek Street in Ketchikan. You must visit Creek Street.
Plan Ahead for Shore Excursions
Shore excursions are a highlight of any Alaskan cruise, offering the opportunity to explore the region's natural wonders up close. However, it's important to plan ahead and book your excursions in advance, as the most popular activities can sell out quickly. Research the available options and choose activities that align with your interests and fitness level. Keep in mind that some excursions may involve strenuous hiking or exposure to the elements, so be sure to pack appropriate gear and dress accordingly.
Additionally, budget for some of those awe-inspiring excursions. I was surprised to learn that a helicopter ride to the glacier could cost around $400 or more per person.

Don't Forget Essentials
While it's important to pack for the unique demands of an Alaskan cruise, it's also crucial not to forget the essentials. Be sure to bring a reliable, waterproof backpack or bag to carry your gear, as well as any necessary medications, personal care items, and chargers or batteries for your electronic devices. Additionally, consider packing a sleep mask as the sun sets late at night and is back up early at around 4:00 am.
Most importantly, bring bug repellent if you're visiting during the summer, especially if you plan on hiking or spending time near wooded areas and streams. However, the bugs weren't too troublesome when walking around the towns at the port.
Embrace the Spirit of Alaska
Ultimately, the key to having an unforgettable Alaskan cruise is to embrace the spirit of adventure and exploration. This means being open to unexpected experiences, embracing the region's unpredictable weather, and immersing yourself in the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you. By following these tips and packing the right gear, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the unique challenges and rewards of an Alaskan cruise and create memories that will last a lifetime.
