Some people are believing these common cruise myths, and it is keeping them from booking a cruise and experiencing a different way to travel. Cruising is a great way to vacation, but there are a lot of myths out there about cruising.
Cruise Ship Myths
I love to cruise as it is a great way to travel and meet new people and learn about new cultures. In this post, I will debunk 6 common cruise ship myths that may be keeping you from cruising.
Myth#1 Cruises are for Old People
This is far from the truth! Cruises are for people of all ages. There are plenty of activities for people of all ages to enjoy. In fact, another myth with this I have been hearing lately is that these brand-new mega ships are only for young people.
I was on the Utopia of the Seas recently, and even though Royal Caribbean is pushing to gear their ships more toward millennials, this new mega ship has plenty do for the Gen X and Boomer generation as well. So, don't let age be the reason you don't cruise.
Myth#2 Cruises are Too Expensive
Yep, this is true cruises can be expensive, but there are also plenty of affordable options available. You can find cruises for as little as $100-$300 per person if you book in the off season. Consider cruising in the Shoulder season in April and May and September and October. Plus, if you book during the Wave Season, when the majority of cruises are booked (Jan - Mar) you can find some great deals as well.
Also, consider booking an older and smaller cruise ship, as they can be a lot cheaper than the new cruise ships.
Check out this video for some sites I like to go to when price comparing my cruises to find the best deals.
Myth#3 You will get Seasick on a Cruise
Yep, you can get seasick on a cruise, but there are ways to prevent it. You can take motion sickness medicine. I never cruise without my seasick patches. Also, if you are prone to motion sickness then look to book a cabin midship and lower or you can cruise on a larger cruise ship. I actually never feel movement on some of the larger cruise ships, like ICON of the Seas or Utopia of the Seas. The great thing about some of these newer mega ships is they are built with stabilizers to help with the motion.
Myth#4 Cruise Ships are Unsafe
Cruise ships are actually very safe. They have to go through strict safety regulations and have plenty of safety features in place. I know with stories of cruisers going overboard some people are afraid this could happen to them. The fact is no one has ever just fallen off a cruise ship. The banisters around the ship are pretty high and you would actually have to climb over the rail to fall off.

Myth#5 The Food on a Cruise is Terrible
I'm not going to lie, I have had some bad food on a cruise before, but I have had more great food than not. The food on cruise ships varies depending on the cruise line. Some cruise lines have better food than others. For instance, if you are looking for really nice fine dining then look at Silversea, Ritz Carolton, Viking, but let's face it those cruise lines are really expensive. If you want some great food on a more affordable cruise ship then look at the following cruise lines, Holland America, Princess, Disney, and Royal Caribbean.
Myth#6 There's Nothing to do on a Cruise
It actually boggles me when people say they could get bored on a cruise. There are plenty of things to do on a cruise. You can enjoy activities like zip lining, rock climbing, swimming, sunbathing, gambling, shopping, and exploring the ports of call.
In addition to the myths mentioned in this post, here are a few other things to keep in mind when considering a cruise:
Cruises can be a great value for the money. You get all of your meals, entertainment, and transportation included in one price.
Cruises are a great way to meet new people. You will be surrounded by people from all walks of life.
Cruises can be a great way to relax and unwind. You can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy some much-needed R&R.
I would also like to add that it is important to do your research before booking a cruise. There are a lot of different cruise lines and ships to choose from. It is important to find one that is right for you.
Happy Cruising!
